Who are these qualifications for?

The Level 2 qualifications in Team Leading are designed for practising or aspiring team leaders who wish to develop their team leading skills and knowledge. These qualifications are derived from the National Occupational Standards for Management and Leadership and are accredited on the UK national qualifications frameworks.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific entry requirements for these qualifications. However, you are likely to be working in, just started, or aspiring to a team leading role. If you are in any doubt about which is the right level qualification for you, please contact your local Centre. Other qualification options are available such as Introductory awards and S/NVQs.

Flexible qualification structure

The Level 2 qualifications in Team Leading offer a highly flexible approach to learning. They allow the freedom and choice to select from the broad range of units available, allowing employers and individuals to tailor the size and elements of the qualifications to suit their specific needs.

Units available to study at Level 2 include:

Personal development as a team leader (Unit code 2001 – credit value 6)

You will learn how to implement and review a development plan, identify breaches in Health and Safety and realise your responsibilities in relation to discrimination and diversity.

Team communications (Unit code 2002 – credit value 5)

You will learn how to plan for a team briefing, identify and evaluate team objectives and involve team members using various methods of communication and how to overcome barriers to communication.

Team performance (Unit code 2003 – credit value 5)

You will learn how to set objectives from clear directions and plan and review these with the team to help improve performance. Additionally you will learn how to propose work improvement plans to management.

Controlling resources (Unit code 2004 – credit value 6)

You will learn about maximising resources to achieve work objectives by identifying what resources are required, how to obtain them, planning for their use, monitoring their effectiveness and dealing with wastage.

Building work relationships (Unit code 2005 – credit value 5)

You will learn about communication methods when dealing with managers, your team and external customers and how to maintain confidentiality and good working relations with people at different levels.

Team development (Unit code 2006 – credit value 6)

You will learn how to implement an Induction Plan for a new member of the team, identify training needs and produce a training plan. You will also learn how to review the training plan and evaluate learning from the training received.

Providing customer service (Unit code 2007 – credit value 5)

You will learn how to identify who your customers are and what needs they have to ensure the appropriate level of service is provided and how to deal with any complaints in a positive manner.

Being a team leader (Unit code 2008 – credit value 5)

You will learn about different styles of leadership and how a leader builds a shared sense of purpose within his/her team.


Award

The Level 2 Award in Team Leading is a concise qualification which enables you to strengthen and develop your knowledge of the various roles and responsibilities of a team leader through focusing on specific skills areas. To achieve a Chartered Management Institute Award in Team Leading, you need to successfully complete at least one unit with a minimum value of 5 credits.

Certificate

The Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading is a more extensive qualification which allows you to broaden your knowledge of team leading skills whilst still maintaining the flexibility to focus on the specific leadership areas appropriate to you and your workplace. To achieve a Chartered Management Institute Certificate in Team Leading, you need to successfully complete any combination of units to a minimum total of 15 credits.

Diploma

The Level 2 Diploma in Team Leading is a more comprehensive structured qualification providing you with all of the key leadership skills to enable you to operate effectively as a Team Leader. It allows you to develop a range of team leadership competencies from building relationships within the workplace to controlling resources. To successfully achieve a Chartered Management Institute Diploma in Team Leading, you need to complete units 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and at least one other unit to a minimum total of 38 credits.

How are these qualifications assessed?

Assessment is normally via practical work-based assignments provided by your Approved Centre. This ensures you minimise time away from work and that you undertake work study which is relevant to your own organisation’s context.

How long will it take?

The time it takes to complete a qualification is dependent on the units you choose and delivery times and methods do vary from one Approved Centre to another. However, as a guide:

  • The Award can take as little as 2 - 3 weeks
  • The Certificate can take between 1 - 3 months
  • The Diploma can take between 6 to 12 months

Progression opportunities

Upon successful completion of a Level 2 qualification in Team Leading, a number of progression opportunities become available:

  • Enhance your professional status by upgrading your membership with the Institute
  • Progress to other qualifications at the same level (e.g. from level 2 Award to level 2 Certificate or to the Level 2 S/NVQ in Team Leading)
  • Progress onto the next level of Institute qualifications – the Level 3 qualifications in First Line Management or the Level 3 S/NVQ in Management.
