New Strategy Launched To Support UK’s Digital Economy

Culture secretary Karen Bradley has launched the government’s latest initiative to help cement the UK as the best place in the world to both start and grow a digital business, while simultaneously making sure the country’s digital economy works for everyone.

The Digital Strategy will see over four million free digital skills training opportunities created, with government, charities, businesses and voluntary organisations joining forces to ensure that people have the requisite skills for jobs in their local area.

Lloyds Banking Group, for example, has already signed up to give in-person digital skills training to 2.5 million people, small to medium-sized businesses and charities by the year 2020, while Barclays intends to teach basic coding to 45,000 more children while assisting up to a million people with cyber awareness and general digital skills.

“This Digital Strategy sets a path to make Britain the best place to start and grow a digital business, trial a new technology, or undertake advanced research as part of the government’s plan to build a modern, dynamic and global trading nation … There should be no digital divide - every individual and every business should have the skills and confidence to make the most of digital technology and have easy access to high-quality internet wherever they live, work, travel or learn,” Ms Bradley said.

The government is also committed to making the UK the safest place in the world for young people to spend time online, with a new Internet Safety Strategy that will focus on preventing young people and children from harm online.
