Generation X ‘Looking For A Career Change’

People in their 40s are increasingly looking for greater professional opportunities, with a fifth of Generation X workers planning a career change.

According to a recent study by Vauxhall Motors, 70 per cent of this age group are looking for a major change in their career, while more than half would like to take on more interesting work. Almost the same number said a key professional motivation is tackling a challenge.

Of those questioned, 20 per cent said they would like to work in a different sector, while more than 60 per cent of people in this age group expressed a desire to become their own boss, London School of Business & Finance reports.

More than half of those questioned felt that remaining in one job for the course of their lives would stifle development - 40 per cent of respondents said they wanted opportunities for growth and learning in their next position.

Vauxhall Motors director of communications Denis Chick commented: “Aiming to uncover the key trends and opportunities for older professionals, it’s great to see such strong findings that really do prove the world is your oyster, whatever the age.”

Earlier this month, UK companies were called on to employ older workers - chief executive of Aviva UK Life Andy Briggs urged businesses to commit to employing 12 per cent more older workers by 2022. Older workers are vital to filling the skills gap, he said.

According to official figures, people in their 40s and 50s are increasingly looking to develop professionally - a report by the Department for Work and Pensions found that the number of people aged between 45 and 59 taking up an apprenticeship last year stood at 11.3 per cent.
